Surveys carried out during 2024 discovered a local Koala colony of much higher density than elsewhere in the Mid Coast Region. Thermal drone imagery uncovered a thriving population of around 60 koalas near Bootawa Dam — one of the most significant discoveries in NSW! Further surveys are being undertaken to help understand what makes the site so successful. This can then hopefully be applied to other areas to enhance Koala habitat.
This exciting find highlights the success of local bush regeneration efforts and gives new hope for a species listed as endangered.
Join ecologist and former Wingham High student Matt Bell as he shares the story behind the discovery and what it means for the future of koalas in our region.
